Apollonius Epitome

[Apollonius Pergaeus / Archimedes] BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso. Elementa Conica'et Archimedis Opera Nova & breviora methodo demonstrata. Rome, Mascardi, 1679.

12mo. [14 x 8 cm], (6) ff., 283, (1) pp., (1) f., 1 blank, 8 numbered engraved plates. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, title stenciled on spine; scored ownership inscription on half-title, toning and generally light, uniform browning throughout; notwithstanding an unsophisticated copy in its original binding.

$2,000

Scarce first edition of this pocket epitome of Apollonius' Conics along with a pr's of the arguments of various works of Archimedes. The present work is not to be confused with Borelli's 1661 edition of Apollonius' Conics, or the Archimedean section which appeared as an appendix to that work (a Latin translation of the work of the Arab mathematician Thabit b. Quarra, which in turn quoted Archimedes.) Rather, much like the author's Euclides restitutus, the work attempts to give an analytical summary of the arguments, without regard to their received form, philological scruple, etc. The works so treated are Archimedes de circuli dimensione; de quadratura parabolae; de sphaera et cylindro; Spiralia; de conoidibus et sp(h)aeroidibus; de aquaeponderantibus; de iis quae vehuntur.
