LUCAS, Francisco. Arte de escrevir. Madrid, Juan de la Cuesta, 1608.

An unusually fresh and genuine copy of the rare 1608 edition – illustrated with 42 fine, full-page woodcuts – of Francisco Lucas’ (b. circa 1525) influential Spanish writing book, the Arte de escrevir, called “the most complete and scientific in its arrangement” of all writing books dating from this period (Strange, p. 92) and “of exceptional importance in the development of Spanish calligraphy” (Baltimore, p. 90). Lucas is celebrated as the inventor of the Spanish bastarda script, and his manual, unlike that of Juan de Icíar (c. 1522-72), “long remained a powerful influence” on Spanish writing (Cotarelo y Mori, p. 427).
