An attractive and genuine example – with all volvelles present – of this copiously illustrated Paris edition (1553) of one of the most important astronomical and geographic texts of the Renaissance, Petrus Apianus’ Cosmographia. The work’s large, cordiform world map contains the most influential 16th-century representation of the New World (with South America labelled ‘America’ and North America depicted as a long strip of land labeled ‘Baccalearum,’ or ‘Land of Cod’).

Rare first Spanish edition (first Italian in 1794) of this attractive illustrated work propounding the “Bernardi Method” of swimming, which, both in terms of the history of swimming and illustrated books on the subject, had an influence in the late 18th and early 19th century equal to that of Melchisédech Thévenot (1620-92) in the 17th century.

Unpublished, illustrated Spanish manuscript on the construction and use of sundials written at the Convento de San Francisco in Marbella in 1610. This handbook on Reloxes, apparently the work of a certain cleric Bartolome Gutierrez, who signed two sections at the rear of the volume (ff. 234 & 236), represents a more practical approach to gnomonics than is usually encountered in this period.
