Rare 1674 (second) augmented edition of the illustrated catalogue of the renowned Wunderkammer of Friedrich III, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein (1597-1659), housed at Gottorp Castle. The volume was authored by the collection’s curator and librarian, the noted mathematician, geographer, diplomat and traveler Adam Olearius (1603-1671). The collection housed several objects from the New World.

A fine pen-and-ink drawing and a very rare letterpress broadside, both relating to the baker’s trade in 18th-century Brussels. The drawing of a finial design – perhaps for a liturgical object or architectural element – depicts St. Honoratus of Amiens (d. c. 600), patron saint of bakers, atop an oven tended by bread makers. Included with the drawing is a 1719 broadside relating to the ordinances of the Baker’s Trade (Broodt-maeckers Ambacht) in Brussels.

Rare suite of prints depicting the twelve Apostles, designed by Ambrosius Francken (1544-1618) and engraved by Antonius Wierix, including two additional images of Christ and Paul by Maarten de Vos (nos. 1 and 14) which at one time occupied a single copper plate.

EARLY 19TH-CENTURY ANATOMICAL STUDIES
ATTRIBUTED TO
THE AUSTRIAN PAINTER ADAM BRENNER

An attractive early nineteenth-century manuscript of anatomical drawings of the human (male) body, many with muscles keyed and labeled in a minute German script. The notebook is attributed by a German pencil annotation inside its upper cover to the Austrian painter Adam Brenner (1800-1891), who studied with Leopold Kupelwieser (1796-1862) and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793-1865) at the Vienna Academy before becoming a varied professional who produced portraits, genre picture, still lifes, and history paintings.
