Rare first and only edition of a presentation work by the painter Pietro Fea da Casale (1771-1842) commemorating his designs for the ‘Scalone d’Onore’ in Turin’s Palazzo di Città (now know as the Palazzo Civico). The volume includes 4 fine full-page reproductive etchings executed by the artist himself and an essay in which he explains his aesthetic and iconographic program, providing a fascinating glimpse into the intellectual background of an important civic commission in early 19th-century Piedmont.

First edition – here in a fine copy from the library of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria and Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1619-37) – of Domenico Fontana’s (1543-1607) treatise recording the greatest engineering feat of the 16th century, the spectacular transportation and erection of the Sistine obelisk upon which Bernini would center his Vatican colonnade. The volume ranks among the masterpieces of late 16th-century book illustration.

This handbook on Reloxes, apparently the work of a certain cleric Bartolome Gutierrez, who signed two sections at the rear of the volume (ff. 234 & 236), represents a more practical approach to gnomonics than is usually encountered in this period.
