A Dutch Masterwork in a Mint Example
Mexico.
BLAEU, W. [Amsterdam, 1647] Nova Hispania et Nova Galicia. .
15 x 19 ¾ inches Fine original color; mint condition.
ne of the most beautiful maps of Mexico in a sterling example. The map’s cartouche is particularly fine, with a lion bearing a sword and the arms of Philip II and the Habsburg kings of Spain dominating the image. Two natives, with bows across their laps, sit to either side. Two attractive, winged figures flank the cartouche, which is further decorated by a ribbon-work pattern. The table at the lower right list native Indian cities and is graced by a pair of armadillos and two putti – one holding an armadillo on a leash and the other playfully reaching as if to grab the armored creature by the tail.
