A Rare Spanish Chart

Rare, separately published. A well-detailed depiction of Santa Catarina Island (here called by the Spanish version of the name) in southern Brazil, which is the site of the prosperous resort city of Florianapolis (home of tennis great, Gustavo Kuerten). The coordinates as given on the chart and the island’s size as depicted both conform to the aforementioned island. It is a well-detailed work, both chart and land map, with a table at lower left listing in describing notable structures and areas.
Tomas Lopez y Varga Machuca (1731-1802), Spanish mapmaker, engraver and publisher, studied with D’Anville in Paris. After returning to Madrid, he enjoyed a long, 40-year career, during which he published over 200 maps, many of them relating to America.
