Beautifully Engraved Straits of Magellan
Straits of Magellan/ Patagonia/ Tierra del Fuego.
OGILBY, J. [London, 1671]
Tabula Magellanica, Qua Tierrae Del Fuego ...
11 ½ x 14 ¼ inches.
Fine hand color; fine condition.
Superb, bold strike of one of the most attractively engraved maps of the Straits of Magellan. The sea is decorated with rhumb lines, compass roses, and many ships – some locked in battle. The cartouche, notes and scales of the map abound in putti. The map itself shows numerous Indians engaged in hunting, preparing food, and other activities. The flora and fauna of Tierra del Fuego are depicted with great creativity: penguins are shown amongst palm trees, and the native hunters try their skills against (apparently plentiful) ostriches.
