Beautiful Early Europe
In Original Color
Europe.
HONDIUS, J. [Amsterdam, 1606/ 1628] Europa exactissime descripta...
14 ¾ x 19 ¾ inches Fine original color; excellent.
Superb original colored example of this early Dutch map of Europe. The fictitious Atlantic islands of Brazil and Frisland are both shown. On the other hand, Hondius has removed many of Mercator’s Arctic landmasses, noting that Dutch sailors had failed to encounter anything but water in that region. Instead, the map shows “Sir Hugo Willoughbes Landt,” discovered during Cabot’s attempt to find a Northeast Passage, as well as the results of Dutch efforts in the same quest. The cartouche, scales and text boxes are bordered in the strapwork style; six ships sail and five monsters lurk in the oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. The Latin text box in the upper right describes the division of Europe between the progeny of Japheth, son of Noah.
