Both globes in excellent condition with bright patina. Terrestrial globe with outline and full body color; celestial with engraved figures for constellations colored yellow against blue-green background.
Very rare pair of globes in stunning condition, produced in Sweden. One of the finest pairs we have seen.
Anders Akerman was the father of globemaking in Sweden, producing his first globes in 1759. His work was issued under the auspices of the Cosmographical Society, which ushered in a renaissance of the geographical sciences in Sweden. Akerman's work was carried on by Fredrick Akrel (1748-1804) and his son, Carl Fredrick Akrel (1779-1862), who updated the globes well into the 19th century. For example, on the terrestrial globe, Chile (1816), Peru (1821), and Brazil (1822) are shown as separate states. The celestial globe is especially striking with finely engraved figures for the constellations and rich coloring.
