A Finely Engraved, American Surveying Compass
MEGARY, A. [New York, early 19th C.]
Magary New York.
5 ¾ x 11 ½ x 2 ¾ inches
Lacquered brass compass with 4 ½ -inch silvered dial with engraved floral center & fleur-d-lis representing north, engraved in script "Magary New York." Blue-steeled needle, outer divided scale. In original customized, mahogany box
A beautifully preserved specimen of American craftsmanship of the early 19th century with an exquisitely engraved compass dial. The somewhat smaller dial here is rare in our experience. The original mahogany box was customized to snugly hold the removable, vertical sighting vanes in place. We have yet to find information on the maker, Megary.
