A Beautiful Example Elegantly Framed
SPEED, J. [London, 1611/ 1614]
Kent With Her Cities And Earles Described and observed.
14 3/4 X 19 3/4 inches
Rich hand color; reinforced at bottom of centerfold, else excellent; museum-mounted and framed with gold-filleted bird’s-eye maple.
A very attractive, early edition of a map of the richly historic county in southeastern England, with inset plans of Canterbury and Rochester and a small vignette of the Battle of Hastings. The densely detailed map reflects the fact that many major structures were located there—the palaces at Greenwich and Eltham, Dover Castle, and the cathedrals at Canterbury and Rochester—along with the magnificent country homes of English nobility and political potentates.
