"The First Separate Map of the Indian Peninsula"--Gole

India. GASTALDI, G. [Venice, 1548]
Calecut Nova Tabula. 5 ¼ x 6 ¾ inches
Fine condition with a strong impression.

  Sold

This important little map, the first in printed form exclusively of India, shows the peninsular portion of the country. As Gole explains, in this respect it reflects the extent of Portuguese penetration of the area at the time. Dehli ("Delli") on the map is on the same latitude as modern Bombay and is north of the kingdom of Dacan. Place names, including Goa, are quite plentiful along the west coast but considerably less so on the east coast.
The map appeared in Gastaldi's La Geografia, the first printed, small-format atlas and also the first to contain several maps of recently discovered areas in the Americas and Asia.

Gole, S. India Within the Ganges, pp. 45-48.
