Large, Attractive Alsace

Alsace. BLAEU, W. [Amsterdam, 1635]
Alsatia Landgraviatus, cum Suntgoia et Brisgola... . 15 ½ x 31 ¼ inches.
Fine original color; large copperplate printed on one and a half sheets, joined before printing, margin restored at bottom, else very good overall.

Beautifully colored, folio-and-a-half map of the Alsace in its earliest Latin edition. The map’s cartouche displays the region’s arms, flanked by two female figures and garlanded with grape vines, illustrating the importance of Alsatian winemaking even in the 17th century. Willem Blaeu’s source for the map, Gerard Mercator, produced two separate maps of the Upper and Lower Alsace, but did not produce a complete map of the region.
