A Very Early Map of France
MUNSTER, S./ PTOLEMY, C. [Basel, 1552]
Tabula Europae III.
10 ½ x 13 ½ inches.
Mended worming at centerfold, very good condition.
An attractive example of one Munster’s Ptolemaic map of France, showing the place names that would have been in use in the Roman imperial period. Munster includes a table with alternate vernacular translations of the names where multiple ones are in use. In a number of cases, he includes modern names on the map itself, notably Paris.
