A Scarce, Beautiful Map of Southern Greece
As Known in Antiquity
CANTELLI, G. ROSSI, G. G. DE [Rome, 1685]
17 x 21 ¼ inches
Original outline color ; cropped & re-margined for original binding, fine condition.
A rare and most elegantly engraved map of southern Greece, showing the Peloponnese, the heart of ancient Greece, with place names and regional divisions as known in the classical age. Part of Attica is also shown, including the walled city of Athens. The map features a particularly fine dedicatory cartouche, flanked with two maidens – one bearing cartographic tools and the other sculpting implements—a fitting emblem for the artistry of this work.
Zacharakis 821/ 546.
