One of the Most Beautiful Early Maps
Of the Turkish Empire

Turkey/ Middle East/ Arabia. SPEED, J. [London, 1676]
The Turkish Empire Newly Augmented by John Speed. . 15½ x 20¼ inches
Fine hand color; bottom of centerfold reinforced, otherwise excellent.

   $3,750

A bright, vibrantly colored example of this cartes-a-figures map of the Turkish Empire with city views and costumed figures in the borders. Among the cities depicted at top are Damascus, Jerusalem, Istanbul and Alexandria. The side figures in their national dress, both male and female, hail from Greece, Egypt, Assyria, Arabia and Persia. The elaborate cartouche features the coat of arms of Turkey. The areas bordering the limits of the Turkish Empire are described in the text, focusing on whether they are allied with the European powers or the Turkish Empire. For instance, of the lands of East Africa, it is said that “The Turke of late subdued it which before obeyed Prester John or the christian Emperour of the Abyssines.”
