A Rarity of the Balkans with Fine Original Color
Balkans/ Greece/ Istanbul.
JODE, G. & C. DE [Antwerp, 1593]
Balkans/ Greece/ Istanbul. .
11 1/2 x 19 inches
Fine original color, re-cornered at bottom; some scuffing at centerfold, else very good.
A rare and attractive work with rich, full, original color; one of the earliest atlas maps to focus on Serbia and the lands around the mouth of the Danube. The map also prominently shows the Hellespont and Istanbul. Included also are Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro.
The De Jodes (Gerard and his son Cornelis) had the misfortune of attempting to enter the atlas market at the same time as the highly successful Ortelius, whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum would be produced in forty-two editions. While the De Jode's Speculum was well regarded, it was commercially no match for Ortelius' Theatrum, which was too well established well before the De Jode atlas saw the light of day.
