An Evocative Bird’s-Eye View
MUNSTER, S. [Basel, c. 1550]
Designatio civitatis Badensis Helveticae,… .
11 x 13 ¾ inches.
Fine hand color; fine condition.
A very attractive bird’s-eye view of the Swiss city known since Roman times for its restorative mineral hot springs, seen in the view at far right in the middle distance. Baden’s spa remained an attraction through much of the city’s history and was visited by Mozart, Thomas Mann, Nietzsche, and other luminaries. The largest edifice in the view, the City Church, at left with the blue roof, seems little changed today from its appearance in the view.
