A Very Early Plan of Antwerp
In an Excellent Example

Antwerp. BRAUN, G. and HOGENBERG, F. [Cologne, 1572]
Anverpia, nobile in Brahantia . . . 13 ¼ x 18 ¾ inches
Superb hand color; excellent condition

A beautiful, well-detailed glimpse of Antwerp, portrayed at the time it was a great commercial center prior to the Spanish Fury, and while it was home to the illustrious mapmaker Abraham Ortelius. It is the first of two views of the city that appeared in Braun & Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum.

The engraving presents the city in a bird’s-eye view, showing the city’s wall and moat, bustling docks on the River Scheldt, the city’s streets and many of its key features, such as the City Hall, The Cathedral of Our Lady, and the Great Market.
