Ottoman Forces at the Walls of Vienna
Vienna & Surroundings/ Military History.
VISSCHER, Nicholas II [Amsterdam, c. 1685]
Viennense Terrritorium Ob Res Bellicas Inter Chirstianos Et Turcas Nuperrime Editum….
18 ¼ x 21 7/8 inches
Fine original color; lightly toned, few stains & marginal mends, overall very good condition.
An uncommon, attractively engraved and colored map, made specifically to show the theatre of conflict between Christian and Ottoman force at and around Vienna. The alignment of Turkish forces are depicted at Vienna, where in September of 1683 Ottoman forces were defeated after a long siege. The Battle of Vienna is considered the turning point in the Habsburg-Ottoman Wars. Town and cities of the region are shown in miniature profile, and the topographic features of the region are artfully depicted.
