The Duchy of Oswiecim, in Original Color
Oswiecim (Auschwitz)/ Zator/ Poland..
BLAEU, J. [Amsterdam, 1663]
Ducatus Oswiezensis et Zatoriensis.
16 ¼ x 20 ¼ inches.
Superb original color; some spotting, else excellent condition.
A beautiful example of Joan Blaeu’s map of the upper Vistula river valley, in beautiful original color in the characteristic style of the house of Blaeu. The region centers on the two Polish cities of Oswiecim and Zator. The notorious network of concentration camps known today by the German name for Oswiecim, Auschwitz, was situated in the vicinity of the city. The map was printed shortly after the Swedish invasion of Poland – the “Swedish Deluge” – which resulted in the sack of Oswiecim. The French text appears to refer obliquely to this: “Je passe sous silence la ville d'Osviecime, qui est dans les marests” “I pass in silence over the city of Oswiecim, which is in the marshes.”
