An Alluring Pictorial Map
Cape Ann/ North Shore/ Massachusetts.
GOFF, Errol W. [Boston, 1934]
A Picture Map of Cape Ann and the North Shore Essex County Massachusetts. .
28 x 34 inches
Color process print. Mounted on rice paper reinforcing a few fold openings & other minor splits, a very good example.
One of the more ambitious and well-executed pictorial maps we've seen; it depicts and describes in rich abundance associated with area's rich colonial and maritime history. It informs beyond what is usually provided in similar tourist-oriented productions. Having been published by the venerable Boston publishing company, then Houghton Mifflin, it clearly reached for a higher standard. On the other hand, the work still has the bouncy charm and eye-catching color expected of the form. It includes inset plans of Rockport, Salem, Gloucester and Ipswich. Twenty vignettes, primarily of historic houses and sites, surround the map. In all, a visual delight.
