Rare, English Chart of Part of Arabian Coastline

Southeast Arabia/ Yemen/ Oman. THORNTON, Samuel [London, 1711]
A Large Draught of the Coast of Arabia from Maculla to Dofar. 16 ¾ x 20 ¼ inches
Fine hand color; excellent condition.

A rare, surprisingly accurate, early English nautical chart of a then remote coastline of what is today eastern Yemen (most of the chart) and western Oman. The engraving consists of two charts that together show a portion of the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula from Al Mukalla in Yemen to Mirbat in Oman. From Samuel Thornton’s rare edition of The English Pilot, The Third Book, first published by his father, John, in 1703.
