Rare Map of Arabia with an Inset of Mecca
Arabia/ Egypt/ Persian Gulf.
SALE, George?/ ANONYMOUS. [Paris?, c. 1750]
13 x 14 ¼ inches
Fine hand color; mended tear at insertion point; else excellent condition.
A very rare map of Arabia with a plan of the Ka’aba in Mecca, with several of its structures numbered and keyed to the legend at the bottom of the engraving. The quite accurate and well-engraved map includes numerous place names along the land routes to and from Mecca, one of which delineates the Hajj.
The map is very similar to, and was likely derived from the one that appeared in George Sales's important English translation of the Qu'ran, first published in 1734. Thus, our map, in French, likely appeared in a French edition of the Qu'ran. The legend below the map listing 21 sites and structures keyed to the map and the inset do no appear on the English edition. The map does not appear in map catalogue or auction records, and only one example appears in OCLC.
