An Important Early Map of China

China / Korea. JANSSON, J./ LOON, J. VAN [Amsterdam, 1675]
Imperii Sinarum Nova Descriptio. . 18 ½ x 21 inches.
Fine original color; fine condition.

   $3,000

A scarce and beautiful map of China and Korea that improved significantly on earlier maps. China’s provinces are presented in greater detail and accuracy, with many of the cities recognizable today. The coastline is much more accurate, particularly in regard to the vicinity of Guangzhou, Macau, and modern Hong Kong. Korea is portrayed as a peninsula, with more cities than on earlier maps. Western sailing ships appear locked in battle in the seas off the coast of Hainan, while others ply the East China Sea. A pair of Chinese junks can be seen near Formosa, modern Taiwan. The cartouche is beautifully engraved with figures of mandarins and merchants, and the scales are decorated with a riot of putti.
