A Very Scarce, Striking Map of the Far East
China/ Japan/ Korea.
CANTELLI DA VIGNOLA, G./ ROSSI, G. G. DE [Rome, 1682]
Regno Della China….
17 x 21 ¼ inches
Light toning bottom of centerfold, else excellent condition.
An elegantly engraved map of China, Korea and Japan, presenting an up-to-date, generally accurate view of the Far East. China’s configuration reflects the benefits derived from Jesuit surveys, and Korea is correctly peninsular; Japan’s main islands are also well drawn, though there is no sign of Hokkaido yet. On Taiwan is the Dutch settlement (N. Zelanda).
Cantelli’s maps, notably their cartouches, were some of the most attractively engraved of the later 17th century. Coronelli’s more celebrated though later maps were clearly influenced in their engraving style by Cantelli. And if anything, the engraving work was finer on the Cantelli maps than on those of his successor. Giorgio Widman was the engraver of this map.
