Fine first issue of this group of city views depicting several key Portuguese stepping-stones towards the Far East. Pictured are Anfa and Azamor, Moroccan towns which had fallen to Portuguese fleets in their early efforts to circumnavigate Africa. Portrayed below are the Indian ports of Diu, the site of a crucial 1509 Portuguese victory, and Goa, captured by the Portuguese that same year. By the time Braun & Hogenberg produced this view, Goa had become the administrative center for Portuguese operations in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
