A Superb New York Metro Region Map

New York City/ Parts of Conn., L.I. & N. J.. BEERS, ELLIS & SOULE [New York, 1867]
Map Of New York And Vicinity... . 29 1/2 x 27 3/4 inches
Fine original color; minor fold wear, else excellent.

A bright, vibrantly colored example of this scarce map of the New York metropolitan region that appeared in just a single edition of the Beers New York State atlas. On the map, concentric circles surrounding New York City at five mile intervals emphasize the centrality the city had already achieved in the region. This is further reinforced by the numerous railroads that radiate from the city. In fact, the map is an excellent record of rail lines of the period, including more local lines. Roads are also provided throughout, and there are street grids for cities of any size in the region. Counties and townships are indicated by colors throughout. Central Park, then recently opened in 1859, can be seen clearly etched and named within the street grid that adheres to nearly all of Manhattan Island. In all, this is a superb portrait of the post-Civil War metropolitan region.
