A Decorative Descendant of an Important Dutch Chart
Florida/ Gulf of Mexico/ Caribbean.
JANSSON, J. [Amsterdam, c. 1640] Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus.
15 x 20 ¾ inches. Fine original color; excellent condition.
Beautiful example of one of the most attractive maps of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. Both Jansson and Blaeu produced versions of this map, with Jansson adding navigational rhumb lines to his. Both were based on the rare piloting chart of Hessel Gerritsz chart of 1631. Gerritsz was the official cartographer of both the Dutch West and East India companies, and his original version of this chart would have been provided to navigators in the service of the DWI. Florida still remains fairly poorly mapped here, indicative of its still minor role in the commerce of the day.
Jansson ornamented Gerritsz’s more austere work with attractive compass roses, sailing ships, and a cartouche and scales decorated with putti and an unusual selection of fauna, including snakes, lizards, a sea tortoise and a bat.
